ALTOONA, Iowa – Lulu Wong and Conchacer, a pair of horses acquired out of claiming races this year, swept Saturday night's pair of six-furlong sprint stakes, the $60,000 Prairie Rose and the $60,000 Prairie Express.
Lulu Wong ($8.80), a $32,000 claim by owner Maggi Moss at Oaklawn Park on Jan. 18, broke sharply, seized command, and won the Prairie Rose in an unchallenged manner by 3 3/4 lengths over 6-5 favorite Missjeanlouise. Lulu Wong's win was the 33rd of the meet for leading rider Terry Thompson and the 21st for leading trainer Chris Richard.
Collecting $36,000 for her first stakes win, Lulu Wong, a 4-year-old Badge of Silver filly, covered the distance in 1:09.13 on a fast track.
Conchacer, taken out of his March 29 race at Hawthorne for $40,000 by Robson Thoroughbreds and trainer Chris Hartman, skimmed the rail under jockey David Cardoso and wore down the pacesetting City Sage for a half-length tally. Conchacer ($23.80) was the longest shot on the board in the field of six.
The 3-2 favorite, Flashpoint, shipped in from Lone Star Park by trainer Steve Asmussen, threatened on the turn but flattened out to finish third, 5 3/4 lengths behind City Sage.
Earning $36,000 for his second stakes win and his 13th victory overall, Conchacer, a 7-year-old Congaree horse, stopped the timer in 1:08.74.
